Well Fishing fans, spring has sprung earlier here in South West Florida than in years past. And, if we don't see another cold front this year it will be just A-ok with this Fishing Guide. That being said, our water temperatures have sky rocketed over the past week. We are starting to see good numbers of snook and redfish moving out of the creeks and onto the areas flats. Our nearshore Fishing has been down right good. Full bags of snapper and sheepshead have been brought in over the last week, and some artificial reefs are even holding schools of permit. With spring in the air and the sun rays shining, it is a fantastic time to go fishing in South West Florida!

With this holiday season arctic blast, our fleet of local guides have been catching up on some house chores. With low temperatures dipping into the 30's we may need a drill and auger to fish this week. All kidding aside, these types of temperatures do not happen frequently in South West Florida. The best approach coming back from this cold, is to concentrate the fishing focus in the deeper channels of the bay and creeks. Slow rolling a jig across the bottom or fishing dead bait should yield some bites.
The nearshore fishing will need some time to come back, the old commercial fishing formula is: how ever long the wind blew, it will take the same time to lay down. So in other words, if it blew North for 3 days, it will take 3 days of East winds to calm and clean the waters. Even though the cold weather is here, it's still a great time to be fishing in South West Florida... But just wait for the warmer weather next week! Capt. Mike Slattery 941-626-6946 www.palmislandoutfitters.com www.charlotteharborchronicles.com After the Christmas holiday the weather here in South West Florida has been beautiful. With morning lows dipping into the upper 50's and daytime highs in the upper 70's, we have the perfect temperature for some fun holiday Fishing. Inshore our pompano bite has been consistent with a mixed bag of fish while jigging the Sand bottom channels. The nearshore fishing has remained strong with boats limiting out on mixed bags of snapper and sheepshead. The Gulf water has been Crystal clear and slick calm making conditions perfect for triple tail fishing. We caught our largest fish of the season this week, it pushed the 20lb. mark. It's a wonderful time to be fishing in South West Florida!
Capt. Mike Slattery 941-626-6946 www.palmislandoutfitters.com www.charlotteharborchronicles.com With a slight change in the weather over the Thanksgiving holiday, we are changing up our game inshore. The bait has thinned out a bit as expected with the dip in bay temps. With this seasonal change, we bolt on our jugs and turn our attention to the deep tidal sand bottom channels in the bay. We focus our casts along the edges of the grass finger bars and edges of the flats. This technique affords us the ability to catch a multitude of species, even in the most undesirable conditions. The idea is to get your bait to the bottom. This will typically yield a variety of inshore species. A few that are a bit more desirable are, pompano, flounder, and trout. With catch rates typically high using this technique, it a great time to be fishing in South West Florida!
Capt. Mike Slattery 941-626-6946 www.palmislandoutfitters.com www.charlotteharborchronicles.com Florida's fall season has heated up this past week. We have had absolutely beautiful weather, with lows in the 60's and highs in the low 80's. Our bait has been plentiful, which allows us to explore the fishery with a fun approach. Inshore, our snook fishing is still going strong. Keeper fish have been caught the last 2 weeks.
Nearshore, our triple tail Fishing is outstanding. Amberjack and Cobia along with Gag grouper are being caught throughout the are on our artificial reefs. There are also kingfish, mackerel, and Bonita crashing through the bait schools just off the beaches. It's a fabulous time to be fishing in South West Florida. Capt. Mike Slattery 941-626-6946 www.palmislandoutfitters.com www.charlotteharborchronicles.com Well it's fall season in Florida and the Fishing can be down right "SPOOKY"... My attempt at a small joke, but in all seriousness, the fall Fishing season can be the best of the year. We are staring down the barrel of the seasons first cold front this week. This means that the fish will start to react to the drop in water temperature with urgency. Expect for a good bite both inshore and nearshore once the wind slows down a bit. Inshore our snook bite has been consistent with mixed bags of lots of species when Fishing shorelines. Nearshore, expect the drop in temperatures to move some larger game fish close to shore. The weather is beautiful and the fish are biting, it's a great time to be fishing in South West Florida.
Capt. Mike Slattery 941-626-6946 www.palmislandoutfitters.com www.charlotteharborchronicles.com Seasonal rain should start cooling off the water temperature. This will start the fall migration of snook in land from our passes and beach fronts. With season opening September 1, snook Fishing is a popular attraction with our clients in the next few months to come. The fall months mark the season for redfish schools. September is a great month to stalk schools of fish that have congregate on our local flats to fill up on food before a fall spawn. Large numbers of both breeder and immature fish can be found co-habitating on the same flats this time of year. Live bait works great, but with the aggressive attitude of these fish, artificial lures can be used to land multiple reds in one trip. As always, it's a great time to be fishing in South West Florida!
Capt. Mike Slattery 941-626-6946 www.palmislandoutfitters.com www.charlotteharborchronicles.com We are in the dog days of Summer, and even the fish are feeling the summer heat. Snook fishing has been the go to for getting bites in the heat. Being a sub-tropical species, they tend to react to the increased water temperature the best. That being said, a difference in 1-2 degrees in water temperatures can make the difference between catching and Fishing. We are finding some fish have migrated to the beach front to find relief from the warmer inshore waters. There are packs of 2-300 fish to be found in specific areas. As typical, it's a great time to be fishing in South West Florida.
Capt. Mike Slattery 941-626-6946 www.palmislandoutfitters.com www.charlotteharborchronicles.com We are continuing to have some excellent opportunities with monster #snook here at Palm Island Outfitters. Plan your charter today right from our website!
Capt. Mike Slattery Tarpon Fishing is rocking after an unseasonal cold front the first week of May. The fish will typically head offshore when the weather takes a turn for the worse. After the season and winds calmed down the fish have settled into a depth at about 30' for the week. They have been shy to show, so the anglers with a side scan unit or 360 degrees sonar have been the most successful in achieving bites. We anticipate more fish moving into the area by the day from both North and South. It's a wonderful time to be fishing in South West Florida!
